Vets 4 Pets
May 2010 Pets Newsletter
Dear Pet Lovers,
It has been an unusually warm autumn up until now, but winter is creeping up on us and many dogs and cats experience stiffness and pain in the cold weather, especially older animals. There are plenty of options to ease those 'old bones' and manage your pet's arthritis, so speak with your vet soon to organise a treatment plan. In other stories this month we look at different anxiety disorders in pets, tips on first aid for pet accidents and emergencies around the home, simple training techniques for living happily ever after with your dog, looking out for chlamydiosis (parrot fever) in birds, plus solving poo-eating behaviour in dogs. Yuk!
Vets4Pets appeal to all our clients to help us with our blood bank, which is running low in blood in the last couple of months. We had quite a few patients who needed blood transfusions and as a result of that most of our regular blood donors are unable to meet our demands for this precious fluid. Also in this edition of our Enewsletter you can get an update on the myxomatosis outbreak in the Northern suburbs and meet our two new vets, Dr. Kevin D’ Mello and Dr. Kate Williams.

Blood donors urgently needed
As you are probably aware, animals occasionally need blood transfusions just like humans. At present our blood bank is almost empty and we need you and your dogs’ help to save other pets’ lives. Ideally, we would like to set up a list of clients and their animals who would be willing to become our regular blood donors on a 6-12 monthly basis. Occasional blood donors are of course welcome as well.
Apart from saving someone else’s life, your four legged friend is going to be sent home with a bag of premium food so he or she can recover quickly.
Blood collection is a rather safe procedure, painless and stress free for your pet. Your pet is going to be lightly sedated in order to keep it calm. The amount of blood collected from your dog is appropriate to its size and it will not affect your dog in any way. Your pet is going to stay with us for a couple of hours to make sure that he or she recovers well before going home.
The ideal donor should be above 20 kg, between 1-6 years of age, fit and healthy, vaccinated, on heartworm prevention and not on any medications at the time of blood collection. If your dog is not up to date with heartworm prevention, it will be tested for free so that you can start your dog on the relevant preventative heartworm medication. If you and your pet are interested in saving another animal’s life, please contact our staff at the front desk and get your dog registered today!
Always remember that today it is someone else’s dog that needs blood but tomorrow it could be yours.

Myxomatosis update
In the last month we saw more cases of Myxomatosis in rabbits. For those who missed the last edition of our newsletter, Myxomatosis is often a terminal disease in rabbits. It is transferred by mosquitoes. We urge all clients to make an even bigger effort and protect their bunnies as much as possible. Try to keep the little ones inside the house and otherwise make sure they are well protected from mosquitoes. We hope that with the cold weather approaching we may have some relief from this devastating disease.

New employees
Vets4Pets would like to welcome our two new vets, Dr. Kevin D’Mello and Dr. Kate Williams. Both of them have been practicing in the UK before moving down under to the warmer climate. We hope that they are going to “enjoy” the winter in Adelaide and we are sure that it will make them feel like home. Dr. D’Mello has been practicing for a while in different areas of veterinary medicine including small animals, birds and exotics and he hopes to expand his skills even further by working with the Australian native wildlife. Dr. Williams is a recent graduate and she is based at our Mawson Lakes practice. A warm welcome from our whole team! We wish them an enjoyable stay and many happy moments. Should you like to find out more about them please check out the ‘Staff’ section on our website.
